Introduction
In part one of our two part Biotech update series titled “Biotech Update: Revisiting our 2015 Report”, Kailash updated our 2015 paper “Where Are We in the Biotech Cycle?”. In the 2015 paper we found that when looking at a combination of fundamentals, deal volume and valuation, we were unambiguous in our bearish view of the group’s future prospects. Figure 1 below is republished from part I and shows that from the end of October 2015 through September 2018 the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) has underperformed by 34%-38% depending on the benchmark universe used.
