So often in the world, darkness takes over. Traumatizing events rock our foundations. Unexpected tragedies shock the world.

And when these things happen, it affects people. We often grow a little darker. Cynical. Hardened.

But some people—often the best of us—have the exact opposite reaction. They go through the worst and come out of it with a positive attitude and a sense of gratitude.

Take Claude Bell. Claude is our oldest living World War II veteran, having served as a surgical technician. After serving, Claude received the Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and two Overseas Service Bars.

Witnessing war firsthand would be a life-changing traumatic experience for most of us. When we came out of it, many of us might view life—and the world—as a little gloomier than when we went in.

But Claude has a different perspective.

As America’s oldest living World War II vet, Claude recently celebrated his 105th birthday with his family at a nursing home. Claude’s unwavering positive attitude is a beacon of inspiration to his family and community.

His consistent response, “I always feel good,” despite a century of experiences, including a World War, speaks volumes about his resilient spirit. This enduring positivity, rooted in gratitude and optimism, is a testament to his strength, resilience, and approach to life.

Claude’s cheerful disposition, even at 105, reminds us all of the power of a positive outlook. He shows us that no matter what life throws our way, a positive attitude can help us not only survive – but thrive.

And as we ponder July 4th and the costs of independence, we highlight Claude Bell’s story to point out a simple truth: the only way to make the world a better place is by believing that it’s possible to do so and that hope is never lost.

In the same way that the Star-Spangled Banner is about the horrors of war casting a light on the tenacity of the American flag, Claude Bell’s story reminds us of the perseverance of the American spirit.

Happy Birthday Claude, and Happy Independence Day to all.

Note: According to Army.mil, fewer than 389,000 of the 16 million Americans who fought during World War II remain.

Nearly everyone alive today has parents or grandparents who are part of The Greatest Generation. The term “The Greatest Generation” recognizes the exceptional qualities and sacrifices of those who lived through the challenges of the Great Depression and fought in World War II. Their contributions helped shape our world today, and their legacy continues to be honored and remembered.
